The Shri Bhagwant Mahila Farmer Producer Company Ltd in Solapur, supported by WOTR, NABARD, and Walmart Foundation, has empowered 1,500 women farmers across 19 villages, achieving a turnover of Rs 93,54,818 since 2022.
Sunanda Prakash Jante’s dream of becoming a beautician is finally taking shape with the support of a project that provided her essential tools to start her beauty parlour. Her story is one among many, empowering over 145 women in Aurad Taluka to establish various ventures through this initiative.
Lambadi women in Telangana have revitalised the traditional craft of Maggam embroidery, enabling them to earn a stable income from home. This change, initiated by a training program from WOTR, has allowed them to avoid migration for labor work and support their families better. Women now earn Rs 5,000-10,000 through their embroidery, which also preserves their cultural heritage.
In a short span, these women from Gandharwadi village in Patoda, Beed, have forged deep bonds through Farmer Field Schools (FFS) initiated by WOTR and Axis Bank Foundation’s ‘Sustainable Livelihoods Programme’. Their journey from initial reluctance to newfound confidence showcases the transformative power of education and community support.
Bireng Soy’s journey began with early marriage and motherhood at 16, forcing her to leave school. With three children to care for and limited land for farming, life grew increasingly challenging. Her husband’s alcoholism worsened their financial strain, leaving Soy as the sole provider. Joining a self-help group led her to WOTR, where she became a community worker promoting sustainable agriculture. Since 2019, she’s been a Krishi Wasundhara Sevika, guiding farming communities towards organic farming through the Axis Bank Foundation’s Sustainable Livelihoods Programme.
In many parts of rural India, patriarchal norms and social stigma confine women to the default role of a homemaker. HSBC’s ‘Promoting Entrepreneurship, Employment Opportunities, and Increased Incomes in Maharashtra’ programme, changed the lives of 1,700 women across 20 villages in Karjat and Shrigonda in Maharashtra, empowering them to become entrepreneurs. Defying tradition, these women today are building successful businesses and transforming their communities.
