On May 1, 2020, WOTR brought together a diverse range of stakeholders including policy makers, government officials, researchers, corporate donor representatives, and development practitioners for a half-day virtual workshop in order to reach a consensus on Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) for building resilience to COVID-19 in rural Maharashtra.
Socio-Economic Implications: Conversion of Farm Ponds into Surface Storage Tanks in Semi-Arid Maharashtra
As Maharashtra state frequently experiences drought conditions, farmers are widely adopting the farm ponds to secure their agrarian livelihood. On the ground as observed in Sangamner block of Ahmednagar dist., farm ponds are used to store groundwater deviating from the original concept of harvesting rainwater. This brief presents the benefit-cost ratio of this practice and notes the unintended consequences of groundwater extraction to store in the farm ponds.
