Maharashtra suffers recurrent spells of drought. A drought during the rabi season in 2011-2012 extended to rabi 2012-13 making it one of the worst droughts in Maharashtra affecting domestic needs, agriculture, livestock, and livelihoods of millions. A few villages in the drought hit regions of Ahmednagar and Marathwada managed fairly well despite the prevailing circumstances, due to the implementation of the Indo-German Watershed Development Programme (IGWDP) by Watershed Organisation Trust (WOTR) to strengthen the resilience of the natural resource base as also to enhance the adaptive capacity of the communities.
