Triggers and Trajectories of Sustainable Groundwater Management in Semi-Arid Regions of Maharashtra, India

Author: ,       Publication Year:

This paper is an exploration of the mental models of groundwater sustainability in the semi-arid regions of Maharashtra. It aims to understand the behavioural aspects of groundwater management, in particular the challenges and actions from the past and present that inhibit or enable sustainable groundwater management in rural areas; the processes and structures that influence groundwater use and management over time, and the psychological beliefs, values, and norms regarding water resources and its security. The study forms a qualitative assessment of the mental models of 43 farmers in three districts in Maharashtra based on agro-climatic and institutional contexts that shape their beliefs, perceptions and behavioural aspects of sustainable water management and conservation.
