A brief snapshot of the role: 

We are now launching a programme to provide technical assistance for ecosystem-centric, climate resilient development in rural Maharashtra in collaboration with related departments of the Government of Maharashtra.

One component of this program is Integrating Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) across Development Policies, Plans and Programs of the Government of Maharashtra. 

We are seeking a highly motivated Consultant in Environment/Ecosystems Management who will be responsible to lead and drive this effort. This critical role will be for a one-year period, which may be extended. It will be based in Mumbai with periodic travel to Pune and across the state.

 

As Consultant – Environment/Ecosystems you will:

    • Undertake an analysis of rural development/environment-related programs being implemented in Maharashtra and assess them from the perspective of their ecosystems impact and contribution to building resilience to climate change.
    • Develop, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, a Draft Policy for Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) that enhances climate resilience in rural Maharashtra covering all stakeholders and related programs. 
    • Develop a Road Map for implementing the proposed EbA Policy.
    • Develop a Training Curriculum (including training material) and conduct Training of Trainers events (ToTs) to promote the concept, practice and application of EbA.
    • Provide support to EbA projects implemented in partnership with the GoM.

  • 7+ years of field experience including in mobilizing communities.
  • A Ph.D/Postgraduate degree in Environmental Sciences or a related field.

We are seeking a highly motivated Consultant in Agroecology who will be responsible to lead and drive this effort. This critical role will be for a one-year period, which may be extended. It will be based in Mumbai with periodic travel to Pune and across the state.

 

As Consultant – Agroecology you will:

    • Work with government and other stakeholders to develop a framework, strategies and road map to benchmark and promote climate resilient and nature positive agricultural practices across the state.
    • Conduct sensitization workshops for agriculture department staff (at all levels) and related stakeholders to familiarize them with the framework, strategies and road map; facilitate their implementation and monitor progress.
    • Develop a Training Curriculum (with related material) and conduct Training of Trainers events (TOTs) for agriculture department staff and other stakeholders to promote up-scaling of nature positive, climate resilient agriculture.
    • Develop/ collate training and promotional material for on-farm production of eco-friendly agricultural inputs for plant growth and plant protection to improve soil health and achieve better yields.
    • Provide support to the agriculture departments/ agencies to popularize the practice and adoption of nature positive, climate resilient agriculture.

As Promoter – Water Resilience you will:

 Conduct consultations/meetings with related government departments and agencies and develop a Strategy and Roadmap to enhance Water Security and Water Stewardship in vulnerable regions of the state.

    • Conduct sensitization and awareness workshops for related government department staff (at all levels)/stakeholders for implementation of the Water Stewardship Program and Roadmap, facilitate the same and monitor progress.
    • Develop a Training Curriculum (including training material) and conduct Training of Trainers events (ToTs) to progress upscaling of the concept and practice of Water Stewardship and its components (Water Budgeting, Aquifer Management, Water Certification – the Water Governance Standard). 
    • Provide support to concerned departments/ agencies to popularize the practice of Water Stewardship and incentivize behavioural change in the way rural communities manage and use water.
    • Contribute to developing an integrated state-level drought resilience plan incorporating ecosystem-based adaptation, watershed development, climate resilient agriculture and water stewardship programs.

Researcher / Sr. Researcher Agriculture

Number of vacancies: 1

Location: Pune 

At WOTR you will: 

  • Visit project implementation areas 
  • Monitor agriculture research and implementation projects 
  • Collect, manage and summarize data across scales from on-farm field trials/observations
  • Ability to design studies, collect and analyze data on research and implementation projects in undertaking
  • Ability to synthesis and publish research results in peer reviewed journals, working papers, policy briefs, and info notes, including translating these into non-scientific language for a wide range of stakeholders
  • Experience of working with farmers, farmer groups and extension services would be an advantage
  • Prepare presentations and reports, produce written outputs of the implementation work and research outcomes
  • Carry out any additional activities requested by project/team Leaders

Qualification: M.Tech, M.Sc. & Ph.D. Agricultural related specialization (Preferably in Carbon sequestration assessments, Land and Water Management, Computer Application, Environmental Science, Agronomy, Soil Science)

  • 4-7 years of experience
  • Well versed with applications of GIS and Remote Sensing tools in agricultural/environmental research
  • Knowledge of carbon sequestration and emission assessment is preferable.
  • Knowledge of crop modelling tools is preferable.
  • Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative methods of research, including required statistical modeling/analysis
  • Good communication skills in English must
  • Knowledge of local language (Marathi/Telugu/Oriya & Hindi)
  • Track record of publishing peer-reviewed articles
  • Training and/or experience in some social dimensions. Evidence of interdisciplinary, applied systems analysis desirable.

Junior Researcher/Research Associate– Social Science (Behavioral)  

Number of vacancies: 1

Location: Pune 

At WOTR Centre for Resilience Studies (W-CReS) you will: 

    • Plan, design and execute qualitative research methodologies to analyze and understand the behavioral impacts of rural communities
    • Document the behavioral impacts of local rural communities on agriculture practices and their land resources in WOTR’s project areas.
    • Conducting PRAs, FGDs and other related activities with local rural communities to collect the data required for various research studies
    • Data management and contributing to report writing on behavioral impacts, agricultural practices, climate change, social vulnerability. 
    • Contribute and support in stakeholder engagement process at different levels
    • Work in close coordination with the trans-disciplinary teams, including practitioners
  • Develop training modules for communities, practitioners and other stakeholders

Digital Fundraising Associate

Number of vacancies: 1

Location: Pune

At WOTR you will

  • Be a member of the Fundraising team
  • Identify and initiate relationships with prospects coming to our website, other WOTR digital profiles and other sources
  • Research prospects to assess their ‘interest’ and alignment with WOTR’s mission & programme areas
  • Setup meetings between relevant internal teams and prospects
  • Develop and manage a detailed prospect database and maintain an active pipeline of prospective donors
  • Work with the management and comms team to develop and update key pitch presentations that showcase WOTR and its works.
  • Coordinate programme visits for prospective donors.
  • Manage individual fundraising campaigns online including coordinating with the comms team and providing updates to individual donors

Experience in research in Economics of Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Climate change

  • Well versed with Quantitative Techniques (sampling, Cost-Benefit Analysis, Valuation of Natural Resources, Impact Assessment methodology)
  • Should be able to do good review of literature
  • Good knowledge of policy analysis and quantitative data analysis but should have the flexibility to do qualitative data analysis, too (if required); skill in developing of tools for investigation (quantitative and qualitative)
  • Willingness to Diversify skills and activities in other relevant areas of Economics (as per the need of the organization)
  • Papers published in Peer review journals (preferably having been at least 2nd author)

Job Description

  • Write scientific reports, policy briefs on different studies conducted by WOTR related to Climate Change Adaptation, Integrated Land and Water Management, Economics, Food and Nutrition Security, Biodiversity, others
  • Work in a team (lead or partner) to design and conduct interdisciplinary research including, but not limited to: action research, systematic reviews and other synthesis products and database development
  • To collaborate with different teams, universities, research institutes to undertake various studies
  • Contribute to research papers and articles preferably in peer review journals and publications
  • Dissemination of research findings to different stakeholders: village communities and represent WOTR in various workshops, conferences, meetings etc.
  • Design and Conduct impact assessment studies of various project interventions
  • Assists and also write proposals to various donors and institutes for research funding

Qualifications: PhD / MPhil/MSc. in Economics/Agricultural Economics/ Environmental Economics with broad understanding of agriculture, natural resource, and human development

Work experience (minimum): 7 years (for post-graduate); 5 years (for MPhil); 3 years (for PhD)
