About WOTR
WOTR is a globally recognized NGO dedicated to transforming the lives of millions across India in participatory watershed development and eco-systems restoration, adaptive sustainable agriculture, integrated and efficient water management, and climate change adaptation, with a special emphasis on vulnerable communities, farmers, and women. To know more about WOTR’s work, check out www.wotr.org

The ERICI project at the Grantham Research Institute (at London School of Economics) and WOTR will work alongside the Munich Climate Insurance Initiative (MCII) and in contact with the G7’s InsuResilience to develop demand-led resilience metrics that can be used for evaluation of insurance schemes. An important part of this work will be focusing on the added value of subjective approaches to resilience assessment, alongside the more traditional objective measures. We are specifically interested in the added value that subjective measures of resilience can bring to our existing understanding of resilience, its relationship to well-being, and our ability to monitor changes in resilience in response to insurance interventions at the micro-level. These metrics will be developed through and applied in practical settings through longitudinal cohort studies of communities in one African and one Asian country (India). The project offers a truly interdisciplinary approach, exploring how insurance products can improve climate resilience, defined as ‘making people, communities and systems better prepared to withstand catastrophic events (both natural and manmade) and able to bounce back more quickly and emerge stronger from these shocks and stresses’ (Rockefeller Foundation, 2016).
In India, a longitudinal study of the communities in Maharashtra covering 16 villages across the two districts of Beed and Jalna. Both these districts fall in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra and have been deemed drought prone. Marathwada is also famous for the amount of farmer suicides that it sees every year reflecting that the farmer population in the area is extremely vulnerable. The Crop Insurance schemes in the country- Pradhan Mantri Fasasl Bima Yojana (PMFBY) and Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme (WBCIS) – are being studied under the project. The idea is to highlight whether these schemes have a significant impact on the resilience of their intended beneficiaries, the farmers. We are looking at the objective measures of resilience in terms of the importance of information and advisories related to agriculture and weather, the rationale behind crop choices, income, infrastructure and overall well-being in addition to the farmers’ understanding of resilience with respect to their households, how they deal with stress periods etc. This will help us gain a comprehensive understanding of resilience at the ground level and establish what metrics we should be looking at in the Indian context of crop insurance when we think about its resilience impacts.
